Congress MP Sonia Gandhi has accused the central government of weakening the MNREGA scheme by the BJP government.

Speaking on Monrega in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Congress MP Sonia Gandhi said, "It is a matter of great concern that the present BJP government has systematically undermined the scheme. The budget allocation is still fixed at Rs 86,000 crore. The scheme faces multiple challenges, including Aadhaar-based payment system and national mobile monitoring system, persistent delay in payment of wages and inadequate payments."

Sonia Gandhi also said, "Congress is demanding adequate financial provision for expansion of this scheme, increase in minimum wage to Rs 400 per day, timely distribution of wages."

Speaking in the Upper House during Zero Hour, he said that the Right to Employment enacted by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2005 was "a landmark law that served as an important safety net for millions of rural poor".  ...It is a matter of deep concern that the present BJP government has systematically undermined this scheme

Budget allocation stagnates at ₹86,000 crore, 10-year low as a percentage of GDP,”.

He also said NMMS is an app used for real-time attendance of workers at MGNREGA worksites with geotagged images.   In 2005 the UPA government launched MGNREGA, a flagship scheme that guarantees 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to at least one member of a rural household.

Seeking better wages and more working days, he said the minimum wage should be raised to ₹400 per day, timely delivery should be ensured and the number of guaranteed working days should be increased from 100 to 150 per year.
