Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal is going to shell out his estranged wife Dhanashree Verma ₹4.75 crore as alimony as part of their divorce settlement.
The same was ordered in a recent hearing at the Bombay High Court, which has accelerated their divorce proceedings owing to Chahal's future schedule in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The couple, who got married in December 2020, have been staying apart for more than two years.
They had applied for mutual consent divorce this year, but their plea to exempt themselves from the six-month cooling-off period, which is mandatory, was rejected by a family court initially because there was partial compliance with the alimony deal.
Chahal had already paid ₹2.37 crore out of the agreed amount.
Justice Madhav Jamdar of the Bombay High Court held that the balance alimony could be paid as permanent maintenance after the divorce is granted.
The court has ordered the family court to decide on their divorce by March 20, 2025, so that Chahal can concentrate on his IPL season beginning March 22.
While rumors abounded about the amount of alimony, Dhanashree's family refuted gossip claiming she asked for ₹60 crore, reiterating that no such amount was ever talked about or demanded.
