New Delhi/Hanoi: India and Vietnam have significantly strengthened their diplomatic and economic relations by elevating their bilateral ties to an “enhanced comprehensive strategic partnership,” marking a major step forward in cooperation across trade, defence, technology, and regional security.
The announcement was made following high-level talks between leaders of India and Vietnam, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. A key highlight of the new agreement is the ambitious target of reaching $25 billion in bilateral trade in the coming years.
Officials said the upgraded partnership reflects growing convergence between the two countries on strategic and economic priorities. Both nations emphasized the importance of maintaining a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, especially amid evolving geopolitical challenges in the region.
Trade and investment were central to the discussions. India and Vietnam agreed to expand cooperation in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, information technology, renewable energy, agriculture, and manufacturing. Efforts will also be made to simplify trade procedures and improve connectivity between businesses in both countries.
Defence and security cooperation is expected to receive a major boost under the new framework. Both sides reiterated their commitment to maritime security, including collaboration in the South China Sea region, where Vietnam has ongoing territorial concerns. India is also expected to increase training, capacity-building, and defence exchanges with Vietnam.
Technology and digital cooperation formed another key pillar of the talks. The two countries plan to work closely on digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and innovation-driven partnerships, aiming to support economic modernization in both economies.
Cultural and people-to-people exchanges were also highlighted, with both governments agreeing to promote tourism, educational collaboration, and academic partnerships to strengthen mutual understanding.
Leaders from both sides described the upgrade as a “natural progression” of their long-standing friendship, which has steadily grown over the past decades. India and Vietnam already share a comprehensive strategic partnership since 2016, and the latest upgrade is expected to further accelerate cooperation at multiple levels.
Analysts say the move reflects India’s growing engagement with Southeast Asia under its Act East Policy, while Vietnam continues to balance its external partnerships amid shifting regional dynamics.
With the new framework in place, both countries are expected to roll out a series of joint initiatives in the coming months to translate the agreement into concrete economic and strategic outcomes.
