India-China border trade through the historic Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district has resumed after a gap of six years, bringing fresh hope for traders and communities living along the Himalayan border.

The reopening of the route marks the revival of an old trading link between India and Tibet. Trade had been suspended in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and remained closed for several years amid logistical and administrative challenges. The route is now open for the current trading season, which is scheduled to continue until November 30.

The first group of Indian traders has already begun crossing towards Tibet. Reports said 16 traders were flagged off from Himachal Pradesh as part of the reopening process. China has approved permits for 20 Indian traders, although the number of permits has been limited partly because of accommodation constraints on the Chinese side.

The resumption is expected to provide a major boost to the local economy in Kinnaur and surrounding areas. Border trade supports not only traders but also transporters, porters, mule owners, warehouse operators and other small businesses dependent on movement through the region. The reopening could therefore create additional income and employment opportunities for local residents.

Under the existing trade framework, Indian traders can export a specified list of goods to Tibet and import designated products. Items permitted for import include products such as wool, pashmina, yak hair, salt, carpets, blankets and herbal medicines. A separate list covers goods that can be exported from India.

Authorities have also been working to ensure that customs, immigration and security arrangements are in place. Coordination among the administration, customs authorities and security agencies is expected to continue throughout the trading season.

The reopening of Shipki La comes at a time when India and China are also restoring other traditional border-trade routes. Trade through the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand has already resumed, while the historic Nathu La route in Sikkim reopened on August 1 after a six-year suspension.

While the volume of trade through these Himalayan routes remains relatively small compared with overall India-China commerce, their importance goes beyond trade figures. For border communities, the reopening represents the return of a traditional economic activity and a potential source of employment.

The revival of Shipki La trade also signals renewed practical engagement between the two countries at the border, even as broader bilateral issues remain unresolved.
