Trump Calls Off Planned Iran Strikes as Peace Talks Show Progress

U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to halt planned new attacks on Iran, saying progress has been made toward a possible agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Trump announced the decision on August 2, 2026, saying that the United States would hold off on further military action after Iran and other Middle Eastern countries indicated support for continued negotiations. He said the parties had reached what he described as the “perimeters” of a potential deal, although a final agreement has not yet been signed.

The decision marks a significant shift from the recent escalation in the region. Washington had been preparing additional military strikes against Iranian targets, including energy infrastructure. Trump’s latest move effectively creates a window for diplomacy while leaving open the possibility of military action if negotiations fail.

A key issue in the emerging agreement is the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes. Trump said the proposed framework would include the immediate and full reopening of the strait. Any sustained disruption there could have major consequences for global oil supplies, shipping costs and energy prices.

Another central issue is Iran’s nuclear programme. Trump has said that the proposed understanding would address what Washington considers the Iranian nuclear threat. Other outstanding questions include Iran’s missile capabilities, regional military activities and the future security arrangements between Iran, the United States and its allies.

The announcement came after heightened diplomatic activity involving regional governments. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump before the decision, with concerns reportedly raised about the consequences of further military escalation. Israel has also indicated that it will work with the United States on completing negotiations.

However, there is no guarantee that the latest diplomatic opening will lead to a lasting peace agreement. Iran has not publicly confirmed all the details presented by Trump, and previous ceasefire and negotiation efforts have broken down amid renewed attacks.

For now, Trump's decision provides a temporary opportunity for negotiators to work toward a broader settlement. The coming days are likely to determine whether the latest pause develops into a formal ceasefire or whether military tensions return
