Centre Revises Export Levies on Petrol, Diesel, ATF From June 1 Amid West Asia Crisis

The Central government has revised export levies on petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) for the fortnight beginning June 1, lowering the duties as global oil markets continue to react to the ongoing crisis in West Asia. The move comes as India closely monitors fuel availability and price stability amid geopolitical tensions in the region.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the export duty on petrol has been fixed at ₹1.5 per litre, while diesel exports will attract a levy of ₹13.5 per litre. The export duty on ATF has been set at ₹9.5 per litre. These revised rates will remain in force for the next fortnight starting June 1.

The latest revision marks a reduction from the rates announced on May 16. At that time, the government had imposed a duty of ₹3 per litre on petrol exports, ₹16.5 per litre on diesel exports and ₹16 per litre on ATF exports. Under the new revision, all three levies have been reduced.

The export levies, which include the Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED) and Road and Infrastructure Cess (RIC), were first introduced on March 27, 2026. The government said the measures were aimed at discouraging excessive exports and ensuring adequate domestic availability of petroleum products in the wake of disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict.

Officials stated that the rates are reviewed every fortnight and are determined based on the average international prices of crude oil, petrol, diesel and ATF during the review period. The mechanism allows the government to respond quickly to changes in global energy markets and refining margins.

Despite the changes in export duties, the government clarified that there will be no change in the existing excise duty rates on petrol and diesel meant for domestic consumption. As a result, consumers are not expected to see any immediate impact on domestic fuel taxes due to the latest notification.

The decision comes amid continuing uncertainty in global oil markets driven by tensions in West Asia, a region that plays a critical role in global crude oil supplies. India, one of the world's largest oil importers, has been adjusting its fuel taxation and export policies to balance domestic energy security with international market conditions.
