Nearly 150 students of a government school in Kerala’s Wayanad district fell ill after experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, stomach pain, nausea, and dizziness, triggering concern among parents and health authorities. Around 20 students were admitted to nearby hospitals for observation and treatment, while the remaining affected students received medical attention at the school and local health centers.
The incident occurred after students reportedly consumed drinking water and food available on the school premises. Following the sudden outbreak of illness, health officials, local authorities, and medical teams rushed to the school to assess the situation. Emergency medical camps were also set up to monitor the condition of the students and provide immediate care.
Preliminary investigations suggest that contaminated drinking water may have caused the illness. Officials suspect that a possible contamination of the school's water source led to the health issues, though laboratory tests have been ordered to confirm the exact cause. Samples of drinking water and food have been collected and sent for detailed examination.
District health authorities stated that most students are responding well to treatment and are out of danger. Doctors treating the hospitalized children said their condition is stable and there is no immediate cause for alarm. However, officials have advised parents to remain vigilant and report any further symptoms among students.
Following the incident, the school authorities temporarily suspended the use of the suspected water source. Sanitation and public health teams have begun inspecting the campus, including water tanks, pipelines, and food preparation areas, to identify any lapses that may have contributed to the outbreak.
The Kerala Health Department has directed a thorough inquiry into the incident and instructed officials to take preventive measures to avoid similar occurrences in educational institutions. Authorities are also reviewing water quality monitoring systems in schools across the district.
The episode has once again highlighted the importance of ensuring safe drinking water and proper sanitation facilities in schools. Parents and local residents have demanded strict action if negligence is found and called for regular inspections of school infrastructure.
Officials said the final cause of the illness will be confirmed only after laboratory reports are received. Meanwhile, health teams continue to monitor the affected students, and most are expected to make a full recovery in the coming days.
