Srinagar:- In a notable contribution to society, retired educationist Ghulam Hussain Katari, who superannuated in 2019 from the Youth Services & Sports Department, has established a modern reading facility—Kataria Library—in Chakmarg Hardapanzoo, Arizal area of Budgam.
The initiative highlights Ghulum Hassan Katari’ commitment to youth development and educational empowerment in the region. Sharing the inspiration behind the project, he said the idea came during a visit to a restaurant, where he overheard two students discussing the lack of nearby library facilities and their need to travel to Srinagar for studies.
“That moment stayed with me. I realized our students deserve a peaceful and accessible place to study. That is when I decided to establish a library in my own area,” Kataria said.
At a time when no such facility existed locally, Kataria took the initiative to create a well-equipped reading space with multiple seating arrangements for students preparing for competitive examinations such as JKSSB, UPSC, NEET, banking, and other tests. The library provides a quiet, clean, and supportive environment conducive to focused learning.
Emphasizing inclusivity, Kataria said the library has reserved seats for specially-abled students as well as for those from economically weaker sections. “We want to ensure that every student, regardless of background, gets a fair opportunity to study,” he added.
Local residents have widely appreciated the initiative, calling it a much-needed facility. Students also expressed gratitude, noting that the library saves time, reduces travel, and provides a motivating atmosphere.
Kataria expressed satisfaction, saying, “My dream has finally come true. I hope this space helps students achieve their goals and build a better future.”
