The Covid-19 pandemic appears to be resurfacing in India, as the country's R-value for coronavirus, which measures how quickly the infection spreads, has increased. India's effective reproduction number (R) for Covid has climbed to above one for the first time since January, according to researchers at the Chennai-based Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc).

R, also known as the effective reproduction number, denotes the average number of people infected by a single sick person. As a result, a number of 1 denotes that every sick individual is likely to infect another. R-values for highly infectious illnesses like measles are typically stated as high as 12-18. According to a BBC report from March of last year, the coronavirus has an R-value of roughly 3.

Over the last week, India has seen an increase in the number of new infections. With 2,067 new coronavirus infections recorded in a single day, India's total COVID-19 cases have risen to 4,30,47,594 (4.3 crore), with active cases up to 12,340. The active COVID-19 caseload increased by 480 cases in 24 hours. According to data from the Ministry of Health, the daily positive rate was 0.49 percent, and the weekly positivity rate was 0.38 percent.

According to data given by the municipal health department on Tuesday, the number of new Covid cases in Delhi increased by roughly 26%, but the positive rate reduced to 4.42 percent.

Following an increase in COVID instances, numerous states and UTs have made wearing face masks mandatory and warned of severe consequences, including heavy penalties, for those who do not comply. According to reports, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has planned to punish people in the national capital Rs 500 for not wearing face masks.
