Amazing Animals That Can Live Without Oxygen!

Most animals need oxygen to live but some animals can thrive without it. These animals have evolved to adapt to low oxygen or oxygen free environments, proving just how resilient life is. Let’s check out these amazing species that blow our minds.


1. Hydra

A cousin of jellyfish and sea anemones, the hydra is a tiny freshwater animal found at the bottom of ponds and rivers. Hydras use oxygen for respiration but they have a cool trick – they can switch to anaerobic respiration (energy production without oxygen) in low oxygen environments. This allows them to survive in fluctuating conditions.

2. Spiny-Headed Worms

Spiny-headed worms are parasitic animals that live in the intestines of their hosts – fish, mammals and birds. Since the intestines are oxygen free zones, these worms have evolved to absorb nutrients directly from their host’s body. This unique feeding strategy allows them to survive in an environment where most animals can’t.

3. Loricifera

The loricifera is a microscopic animal that lives in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean. Found in the mud of the seabed, these creatures have a remarkable ability – they use hydrogen instead of oxygen for respiration. 4. Tardigrades

5. Henneguya salminicola

Henneguya salminicola is a microscopic parasite that lives inside the bodies of salmon. This incredible organism stunned scientists when they found out it has no mitochondria, the cellular structures responsible for oxygen based energy production. Instead of using oxygen, Henneguya salminicola absorbs nutrients directly from its host, making it one of the most unique oxygen free creatures ever discovered.
