Dalit Worries Over 'Jatshahi', 'Karchi-Parchi' Hurt Congress in Haryana

The Congress party’s recent struggles in Haryana can be traced to a growing discontent among Dalit voters, who feel sidelined by the dominance of 'Jatshahi' — the perceived favoritism towards Jats. Many in the Dalit community have voiced concerns over ‘Karchi-Parchi’ politics, a colloquial term referring to nepotism and backdoor dealings that they believe prioritize the interests of a few over the masses.

Haryana’s political dynamics have long revolved around caste equations, and while Congress has historically enjoyed strong support from Dalits, recent events have shifted the balance. Dalit leaders within the party have raised alarms about being overlooked for key positions, leading to a sense of marginalization. This growing rift has allowed other parties, particularly the BJP and regional outfits, to court the disillusioned Dalit electorate.

Critics argue that Congress has failed to address these concerns effectively. While the party leadership has made attempts to appeal to Dalit voters, many believe the efforts come too late and are superficial. The gap between party promises and ground realities continues to widen, further damaging Congress's credibility.

The upcoming state elections will be a litmus test for Congress. If the party fails to bridge this divide and reassure Dalit voters, it could face a significant setback in its quest to regain political dominance in Haryana.
