Kharge Accuses Modi Govt of Control

Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress President, launched a scathing attack on the Modi government at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, accusing it of systematically eroding the autonomy of India’s constitutional institutions. Speaking on Sunday, Kharge argued that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government has been working to centralize power by weakening institutions meant to safeguard democracy.

In his address, Kharge emphasized how independent institutions such as the Election Commission, judiciary, and media have faced undue pressure under the current administration. He alleged that the government has been using these institutions as tools for political advantage, undermining their neutrality and credibility.

The Congress chief’s remarks come amidst growing concerns over alleged political interference in institutions that were historically designed to function independently. Kharge called this trend a “calculated assault” on India’s democratic fabric, warning that it poses a serious threat to the nation’s foundational values.

Leaders attending the CWC echoed Kharge’s sentiments, urging collective action to safeguard constitutional integrity. Senior Congress leaders highlighted specific instances where they believed governmental overreach compromised the impartiality of institutions.

Kharge also called for greater opposition unity, stressing the need to form a coalition to counter the BJP's centralizing tendencies. He appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and hold the government accountable for its actions.

The BJP has yet to respond to Kharge’s accusations, though the ruling party has previously dismissed similar allegations as baseless and politically motivated. With the Lok Sabha elections nearing, such sharp criticisms are expected to intensify, setting the tone for a highly polarized political landscape.
