Omar Abdullah's Statehood Move Dims Hopes for Article 370 Revival
The recent resolution by Omar Abdullah, advocating for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood, has stirred controversy, with political analyst and PDP leader Waheed Para suggesting that it signifies a retreat from the larger struggle for Article 370's revival. According to Para, Abdullah's focus on statehood alone diverts attention from the critical issue of reinstating special autonomy, which was revoked by the central government in August 2019.
“Omar’s resolution might offer some temporary relief, but it weakens our core demand for Article 370,” stated Para, stressing that the National Conference (NC) leader’s stance could set a troubling precedent. He argued that pushing for statehood without addressing the region’s lost autonomy could lead to a diluted political movement, making it harder to reclaim special status in the future.
On the other hand, NC officials defended the move, claiming that restoring statehood is a practical step toward rebuilding the region's political structure. They emphasized that it doesn't signify a complete departure from their long-term goal of regaining autonomy.
The debate has highlighted the challenges faced by political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, who must balance immediate governance needs with aspirations for greater autonomy. While Abdullah’s proposal has garnered support from some quarters for its pragmatic approach, critics fear it may undermine broader efforts to reverse the central government’s controversial decision on Article 370.
