Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares Bueno has announced that Spain will give 10 million euros to the Lebanese Army.

Bueno made the statement after he met with President Joseph Aoun at Baabda Palace in Beirut, Lebanon, according to the Lebanese presidency.

The Spanish minister said Spain will continue to support Lebanon in stability and humanitarian response, especially through the army and UNIFIL, according to reports.

He said the 10 million euros will be used to pay salaries and logistics for the army.

Bueno said Spain condemns all attacks against civilians and infrastructure and supports the deployment of the Lebanese army south of the Litani River for the safety of both Lebanese and Israeli citizens.

He also said Spain will help rebuild Lebanon which has just emerged from a 14-month war between Israel and Hezbollah.

Bueno also invited Aoun to visit Spain.

In December, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez received his Lebanese counterpart Najib Mikati in Madrid to discuss the situation in Lebanon and the Middle East.

The Spanish prime minister’s office said the meeting focused on Lebanon just two weeks after the ceasefire with Israel & five days after Bashar al-Assad fell in Syria.

Both leaders stressed the need to turn the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel into a lasting peace and to implement fully UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to end hostilities for good.

Sanchez reiterated Spain’s support to Lebanon and told Mikati Spain will contribute to reconstruction so the displaced can go back to their homes.

The leaders also talked about the need for an orderly political transition in Syria and agreed a stable Syria is good for the whole region especially for Lebanon.
