Statehood Before Special Status: Omar Abdullah's Priority
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has once again made a strong case for the restoration of statehood, asserting it must precede any demand for special status under Article 370. Speaking at a press briefing in Srinagar, Abdullah called for a united political effort to reclaim Jammu and Kashmir's constitutional rights while maintaining that the path forward requires patience and prioritization.
"Statehood is non-negotiable. Without it, discussions on special status hold no ground," Abdullah stated. He also criticized the central government for what he termed "cosmetic development" initiatives that fail to address the region's political disempowerment since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
His remarks come amidst growing demands from various regional parties for a rollback of the changes made in August 2019. Abdullah, however, urged leaders to align their priorities, warning that overreaching too soon could weaken the collective bargaining power.
Analysts see Abdullah's measured approach as a call for pragmatism. Political commentator Arshad Ahmed remarked, "Restoring statehood would mark the first step in rebuilding trust between New Delhi and J&K. Special status can only be meaningfully pursued after that."
Meanwhile, the BJP has dismissed Abdullah’s statement as a political gimmick, accusing him of clinging to outdated ideas. However, Abdullah’s insistence on statehood resonates with many in the Valley, who view it as a precursor to regaining dignity and representation.
With Assembly elections potentially on the horizon, Abdullah’s remarks are likely to shape the discourse in the months ahead, reigniting debates over Jammu and Kashmir's political future.
