As winter sets in, many people notice their skin feeling unusually dry, tight, or irritated. Dermatologist Dr. Priya Puja of Kaya Ltd explains that sudden weather changes, cold waves, and fluctuating moisture levels can disrupt the skin’s natural balance, making it essential to adapt skincare routines for the season.
Dr. Puja recommends starting with a gentle cleanser. “Avoid harsh foaming washes. Opt for creamy or oil-based cleansers containing aloe vera, glycerine, or ceramides,” she advises. Lukewarm water is key, hot water can further dry out the skin.
Hydration is crucial. Layering products helps lock in moisture. Hydrating serums act like a moisture magnet, followed by a rich, barrier-strengthening moisturizer. If dryness persists, a few drops of facial oil, jojoba, rosehip, or argan, can be added. Serums with hyaluronic acid or niacinamide and moisturizers with shea butter or squalane are especially effective.
Daily habits also play a role. Shorten showers and avoid very hot water, use a humidifier indoors, and protect hands and feet with cotton gloves and socks. Applying thick cream or petroleum jelly before bed can prevent winter dryness.
Sunscreen is often overlooked in winter. Dr. Puja warns, “UV rays can still damage skin even on cloudy days.” A cream-based SPF 30 or higher should be applied daily to the face, neck, and exposed areas.
Finally, exfoliate and nourish wisely. Gentle exfoliation once a week removes dead skin cells, allowing creams and oils to penetrate better. Mild scrubs like oatmeal, coffee, or sugar are preferable over harsh chemical exfoliants. A skin-friendly diet rich in nuts, seeds, avocado, and omega-3 foods further supports skin health from within.
With these simple adjustments, your skin can stay hydrated, protected, and radiant, even during the harshest winter days.
