The annual Amarnath Yatra has witnessed a strong start this year, with the number of pilgrims increasing by nearly 28 percent during the first week compared to the same period last year. Officials said the surge reflects improved security arrangements, better infrastructure and favourable weather conditions, encouraging more devotees to undertake the sacred pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to official figures, lakhs of devotees from across India have already paid obeisance at the holy cave, which houses the naturally formed ice Shivling revered by Hindu pilgrims. Authorities said the pilgrimage has been progressing smoothly despite intermittent rainfall in some parts of the Kashmir Valley.
The Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB), along with the Jammu and Kashmir administration, has put extensive arrangements in place to ensure the safety and convenience of pilgrims. Security has been strengthened with the deployment of personnel from the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies along both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. Regular surveillance, convoy protection and area domination exercises are also being carried out to ensure a safe pilgrimage.
Medical facilities, emergency response teams, weather monitoring systems and helicopter services have also been enhanced this year. Temporary shelters, food camps and sanitation facilities have been established at key locations along the trekking routes to support the increasing number of pilgrims. Officials said these measures have significantly improved the overall experience for devotees.
Pilgrims expressed satisfaction with the arrangements, praising the smooth movement of convoys, better road connectivity and efficient assistance provided by volunteers and security personnel. Many said the spiritual atmosphere and improved facilities had made the challenging journey more comfortable than in previous years.
Authorities have advised pilgrims to remain alert to changing weather conditions, particularly during the monsoon season, and to follow all safety guidelines issued by officials. Daily weather updates and route advisories are being issued to minimise risks associated with landslides or heavy rainfall in the mountainous region.
The Amarnath Yatra is one of India's most significant annual religious pilgrimages, attracting devotees from across the country and abroad. The sharp increase in pilgrim numbers during the opening week is being viewed as a positive sign for the remainder of the pilgrimage season.
Officials remain confident that with continued coordination between security agencies, civil administration and the Shrine Board, the yatra will continue safely and smoothly. They have urged devotees to register in advance, travel only through authorised routes and cooperate with authorities to ensure a secure and successful pilgrimage.
