The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday carried out a major anti-encroachment drive in Udhampur district, removing several illegally constructed structures from government land along Dhar Road near Mian Bagh, close to the strategically important Air Force Road. The operation was conducted by revenue officials with support from the police and local administration.
According to officials, the drive targeted temporary tin sheds that had been erected on state land and were being used for roadside commercial activities. Authorities stated that the issue had persisted for a long time, with repeated complaints being submitted to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and the Tehsildar regarding unauthorized occupation of public land.
Naib Tehsildar Roun Maroof Khan said the encroachments were creating safety concerns as the structures were located alongside a busy highway. Large crowds reportedly gathered around the area during evening hours, increasing the risk of traffic accidents and congestion. The administration had issued notices to the occupants before initiating the removal process.
Officials revealed that out of seven illegal sheds identified during the survey, five were voluntarily removed by the occupants after receiving notices. The remaining two structures were demolished by the administration during Tuesday’s operation. Authorities said the action was taken only after due legal procedure and repeated warnings to the encroachers.
The administration also highlighted security concerns linked to the location. Some of the sheds allegedly had CCTV cameras facing the road in an area that witnesses frequent movement of security forces and lies close to Air Force installations. Following requests from security agencies, officials decided to remove the remaining structures to prevent any potential security risks.
The latest action forms part of a broader campaign by the Jammu and Kashmir administration to reclaim government land and remove illegal occupations across the Union Territory. In recent weeks, authorities in Udhampur and other districts have launched similar drives against unauthorized constructions, including properties allegedly built on encroached land and structures linked to criminal activities.
Local residents largely welcomed the move, saying the encroachments had narrowed public spaces and created traffic and safety issues. Officials have indicated that more such drives will be carried out in the coming days as part of ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with land laws, improve public safety and protect strategically sensitive areas from unauthorized occupation.
