Ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra, the Indian Army has started specialised training sessions for Village Defence Guards (VDGs) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district to strengthen security preparedness in the region.
The training programme is focused on improving the operational readiness of local defence volunteers who assist security agencies in maintaining vigilance in vulnerable areas during the pilgrimage season. Officials said the initiative aims to enhance coordination between villagers and security forces, especially in remote and sensitive regions along the yatra route.
During the sessions, VDG members are being trained in weapon handling, surveillance techniques, emergency response, and area patrolling. Army personnel are also educating volunteers about communication protocols and methods to identify suspicious movement or activities.
Security arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra have been intensified across Jammu and Kashmir following concerns over possible terror threats. Authorities are taking preventive measures to ensure the safety of thousands of pilgrims expected to participate in the annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine.
Officials said the involvement of Village Defence Guards plays an important role in strengthening grassroots security networks in hilly and remote areas where local knowledge can help security agencies respond quickly to any threat.
The Amarnath Yatra is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks under tight security cover, with deployment of Army, police, paramilitary forces, and intelligence teams across the route. The administration has also increased surveillance and emergency preparedness to ensure a peaceful and safe pilgrimage season.
