Avoiding elections will not help says Omar Abdullah

Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the National Conference (NC), warned on Sunday that not voting has proven to be very harmful in prior elections

He was addressing a public meeting, according to a news release.

Keeping our distance from elections would not assist us either. We can't expect sitting to fix our problems.

Even now, there are concerted efforts to divide us. In the rest of the country, communal lines are being drawn, while in Jammu and Kashmir, regional and ethnic lines are being drawn.

"We have to hold such forces at bay in the future elections, who are eager to prosper on local fault lines," Omar stated.

He made a passionate plea for people to stay united and not allow regional and religious divisions to arise.

Party General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, senior leaders Mian Altaf Ahmad and Javed Rana, Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq, Provincial President Rattan Lal Gupta, YNC Provincial President Ajaz Jan, Deputy Political Advisor to VP Mudassir Shahmiri, NC OBC Cell chairman Abdul Gani Kohli, and other party functionaries accompanied Omar.

"The concerns will have an impact on the election results," Omar remarked.

"If a person is to become your representative, it needs to be from you, a known face, whom you can confide in your concerns for their prompt redressal," he stated, emphasising the importance of selecting the appropriate candidate.

If your agent is a stranger, getting your issues resolved will be more challenging."

NC, he claimed, has always been a big supporter of awarding Gujjar and Pahari communities ST status.

"Since 1983, successive NC governments led by my father and me have worked hard to include the Pahari group on the list."

Our attempts were always fruitless due to the negative attitude from New Delhi.

Despite New Delhi's dismissive attitude toward our legislation in this regard, we chose to provide Paharis 4% and OBCs 1% reservation in 2014.

However, the proposed reservation was shelved by the former government, and subsequent governments also ignored it.

Our stance has not changed; our party is committed to the emancipation of every single person in J&K.

We've worked for people from all walks of life and will continue to do so with fresh zeal.

"We will work hard to ensure that everyone has their rightful rights," he stated.

He said that the August 2019 decisions were the result of NC's infirmities.

"No one would have ventured to touch our status, identity, or fundamental rights if we had been strong," he added.
