Wildlife officials in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district successfully captured two black bears that had strayed into a residential area, causing panic among villagers. One of the bears was later released into a nearby forest after being declared fit by veterinary experts, while authorities continued to monitor the second animal.

The incident occurred in a village in Kulgam where residents spotted the bears roaming close to homes and agricultural fields. Fearing possible attacks, locals alerted the Wildlife Protection Department, which immediately dispatched a rescue team to the area.

Officials said the operation was challenging as the bears had moved through densely populated sections of the village. Wildlife personnel used tranquilizer equipment and coordinated with local residents to safely capture the animals without causing injuries to either the bears or villagers.

According to department officials, the bears are believed to have ventured into the village in search of food. Human-wildlife encounters have become increasingly common in several parts of Kashmir in recent years as expanding settlements and shrinking forest habitats bring animals closer to human habitation.

After medical examination, one of the captured bears was found to be healthy and was released into a suitable forest habitat away from populated areas. Authorities said the release was carried out following standard wildlife management protocols to ensure the animal's safety and reduce the likelihood of it returning to human settlements.

The second bear remains under observation, with officials assessing its condition before deciding on further action. Wildlife experts are examining whether the animal requires treatment or relocation to a safer habitat.

Local residents expressed relief after the rescue operation concluded successfully. Many villagers had remained indoors for hours as teams worked to capture the animals and secure the area.

The Wildlife Protection Department has urged residents living near forested regions to remain cautious and avoid approaching wild animals. Officials also advised people to promptly report sightings to authorities instead of attempting to chase or confront animals themselves.

Kulgam and several other districts in Kashmir frequently witness sightings of black bears, particularly during the summer and autumn months when food shortages in forests often drive wildlife toward villages and orchards. Wildlife officials continue to conduct awareness campaigns aimed at reducing human-animal conflict and promoting safe coexistence.

The successful rescue and release operation highlights the importance of coordinated efforts between local communities and wildlife authorities in handling such encounters while ensuring the safety of both humans and animals.
