At least 15 people were killed and several others injured after a passenger bus met with a tragic accident in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning. The incident occurred when the bus, travelling from Ramnagar to Udhampur, lost control and plunged into a deep gorge along a hilly stretch of road.
According to officials, the accident took place around 10 am near Kagort village in the Ramnagar area. The bus was navigating a sharp blind curve on the mountainous road when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to roll down the hillside into the gorge.
Initial reports confirmed that at least 15 passengers died in the accident, while around 20 others sustained injuries, some of them critically. The number of casualties is expected to vary as rescue operations continue and more information becomes available from authorities on the ground.
Local residents were the first to reach the accident site and began rescue efforts immediately, pulling injured passengers out of the wreckage. Soon after, police teams, emergency responders, and disaster relief forces joined the operation. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, and arrangements were also being made to airlift critically injured victims for advanced medical treatment.
Officials stated that the bus was coming from a remote village and was carrying several passengers at the time of the accident. The exact cause of the mishap is still under investigation, though difficult terrain, sharp curves, and possible loss of control are being considered as contributing factors.
Authorities, including senior administrative officials, are closely monitoring the situation and have directed all necessary support for rescue and medical assistance. Messages of condolence have been expressed by leaders, and compensation for the victims’ families is expected to be announced.
The incident once again highlights the risks associated with travel on mountainous roads in Jammu and Kashmir, where narrow routes and sharp turns often lead to fatal accidents if vehicles lose control. Rescue operations were ongoing at the time of the latest reports, with efforts focused on saving lives and clearing the accident site.
