National Conference president Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday criticised opposition parties over the ongoing controversy surrounding liquor shops in Jammu and Kashmir, accusing them of hypocrisy and political opportunism.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Abdullah questioned why several leaders remained silent when liquor outlets were allegedly opened across different parts of the Union Territory in previous years. He claimed that the issue was now being raised only to create political controversy and mislead the public ahead of upcoming political developments.
“Why were they silent when wine shops were opened everywhere?” Abdullah asked while reacting to criticism directed at the administration over liquor sales. He further said, “Now, suddenly, they are trying to mislead the public for political gains.”
The senior National Conference leader alleged that some political groups were attempting to use sensitive social and religious issues to polarise people instead of focusing on development and governance.
His remarks came amid renewed political debate over the regulation of liquor outlets in Jammu and Kashmir. Several parties and social organisations have recently demanded stricter controls on the sale of alcohol in the region.
Abdullah also urged political leaders to avoid creating unnecessary divisions among people and instead focus on issues affecting employment, development, and peace in the Union Territory.
The statement has triggered fresh political reactions, with opposition leaders accusing the National Conference of attempting to deflect criticism surrounding administrative decisions.
