Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall caused widespread destruction in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, damaging at least 16 houses, 41 shops and a government school, officials said on Thursday. The sudden flooding disrupted normal life, blocked roads and forced local authorities to launch relief and assessment operations in the affected areas.

According to district officials, the flash floods followed intense rainfall in the hilly region, sending torrents of water, mud and debris through several villages and market areas. Residential buildings, commercial establishments and public infrastructure suffered significant damage, while agricultural land was also affected. Fortunately, no loss of life has been reported so far, though several families have been displaced from their homes.

The worst-hit areas witnessed overflowing drains and seasonal streams, with floodwaters entering houses and shops within minutes. Many residents rushed to safer locations as the water level rose rapidly, while local volunteers joined police and disaster response teams in helping people move to secure areas. Officials said emergency services responded promptly after receiving reports of flooding.

The district administration confirmed that 16 houses sustained varying degrees of damage, while 41 shops in local market areas were affected by floodwaters and debris. A government school also suffered damage, raising concerns about the reopening of classes once the weather improves. Assessment teams have begun surveying the affected villages to estimate the overall losses and identify families requiring immediate assistance.

Authorities have deployed teams from the police, revenue department and disaster management agencies to restore normalcy. Efforts are underway to clear debris from roads, restore essential services and provide relief materials to affected residents. Officials have assured that compensation will be provided in accordance with government norms after a detailed damage assessment.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued rainfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the next few days, increasing the possibility of further flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas. Residents living near rivers, streams and hill slopes have been advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

The latest incident highlights the growing impact of extreme weather events in the Himalayan region during the monsoon season. With rescue and relief operations continuing, the district administration has appealed for public cooperation while monitoring weather conditions around the clock. Authorities remain on high alert as additional rainfall could further affect infrastructure and daily life in the region.
