Amid the escalating tension in the valley over the killing of a Kashmiri Pandit, Rahul Bhat by militants, the Hindu-Muslim brotherhood was glimpsed by Y K Pora of Kulgam district when Muslims performed the last rites of 80-year-old Hindu lady, Dulari Bhat.

The Pandit woman hailed from Kulgam district and had gone to Mattan, Anantnag to attend a marriage ceremony of her relatives. it was during the ceremony her health deteriorated leading to her death.

Later, her mortal remains were brought back to her native village, where hundreds of her Muslim neighbors were waiting for her body.

Altaf Ahmad, one of her neighbors said, “The deceased was a great human being who would visit Muslims on the occasion of festivals and also whenever anyone among us would die. She was part and parcel of the composite culture and today, it is our duty to return the favor by ensuring her last rites are performed as per their religious rites.”

Son of the deceased, Subash Bhat expressed his gratitude and thanked his Muslim neighbors for supporting them in his hour of grief.

“We have been living together and we didn’t flee Kashmir even though our father was killed in the 90s. Since then, we have been living together with Muslims of the area, who are with us in time of this great loss,” he said.
