Srinagar: In a move aimed at making healthcare more affordable, the government has capped the prices of several essential medicines, including key drugs used for the treatment of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, infections, and women's health conditions. The decision is expected to reduce the financial burden on patients who require long-term medication.
The price regulation has been implemented through the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), which recently fixed retail prices for 30 drug formulations. Among the medicines covered are commonly prescribed anti-diabetic drugs, a significant relief for patients managing chronic conditions that require continuous treatment.
Health experts have welcomed the move, noting that diabetes remains one of the most prevalent lifestyle diseases in India. Lower medicine prices are expected to improve treatment adherence and make essential healthcare more accessible, particularly for low- and middle-income families.
Officials said the revised pricing mechanism is intended to ensure that patients are not forced to bear excessive medication costs while maintaining the availability of quality medicines in the market. Retailers and manufacturers are required to comply with the notified prices.
The decision is expected to benefit thousands of patients across Jammu and Kashmir, where the prevalence of diabetes and other chronic illnesses has been increasing in recent years. The move is part of broader efforts to improve access to affordable healthcare and essential medicines across the country.
Healthcare authorities have advised patients to consult their doctors and pharmacists regarding the updated prices and availability of the affected medicines.
