The Indian Army recovered a cache of arms and ammunition, including two AK-series rifles and a hand grenade, during a search operation in the Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district on Monday.
According to defence officials, the operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of hidden weapons in the forward area near the Line of Control (LoC). During the search, security personnel discovered two AK rifles, a hand grenade and other war-like stores concealed in the area. The recovered items have been seized for further investigation.
The Army said the successful recovery has dealt a blow to attempts by terrorist groups to infiltrate weapons into the Kashmir Valley and use them for carrying out attacks. Security agencies are now trying to ascertain the origin of the arms and identify the network involved in smuggling the weapons.
The Keran sector in north Kashmir's Kupwara district has remained one of the most sensitive infiltration routes along the LoC due to its difficult terrain and dense forests. Security forces have intensified surveillance and anti-infiltration operations in the region in recent months amid concerns over renewed attempts by terrorist groups to push militants and arms into Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said joint search and sanitisation operations in the area will continue to ensure that no additional weapons or suspicious materials remain hidden in the sector. The latest recovery comes amid heightened security measures across Jammu and Kashmir, with security agencies maintaining a high level of alert to thwart any terror-related activities.
The Army has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a robust counter-infiltration grid and ensuring peace and stability in the region through sustained operations along the Line of Control.
