A police constable in Jammu and Kashmir allegedly shot his wife dead following a domestic dispute before attempting to take his own life, officials said on Saturday. The incident took place in the Kathua district and has shocked local residents.
According to police sources, the accused constable, identified as Vishal Singh, was posted with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and was reportedly at home when an argument broke out between him and his wife. During the heated quarrel, he allegedly used his service rifle to shoot his wife, killing her on the spot.
Soon after the shooting, the constable allegedly turned the weapon on himself and attempted suicide. Family members and neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing gunshots and informed the police. The injured policeman was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where doctors said his condition remains critical but stable.
Police teams later reached the spot and recovered the weapon used in the incident. The body of the deceased woman was sent for post-mortem examination while forensic experts began collecting evidence from the house. Officials said a detailed investigation has been launched to determine the exact sequence of events and circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
Preliminary findings suggest that the couple had been facing domestic tensions for some time, though police have not officially confirmed the reason behind the dispute. Authorities are also questioning relatives and neighbours as part of the investigation.
Senior police officers described the incident as deeply unfortunate and said strict departmental procedures would follow once the investigation is completed. The case has once again raised concerns about stress and mental health issues among security personnel.
