JK police in Ramban have been urged to identify "fake media groups"

The working journalist association of the district applauded the decision of the District Magistrate, Ramban, Mussarat Islam, to verify the "antecedents andsource of funding of all so-called journalists" through local police.

In a letter to Ramban's Senior Superintendent of Police, Mohita Sharma Garg, Islam drew the officer's attention to the growing number of unregistered web-based news organisations that operatethrough various social media platforms, particularly Facebook, and are accused of spreading "propaganda, fake news," as well as "blackmailing" government officials in the district.

"They are frequently seen meddling with the smooth running of administrativeaffairs and planting anti-government articles geared primarily at maligning the administration's image and putting them in a negative light.

"A large number of district and sectoralofficers have complained of harassment at their hands," the district magistrate said, adding that "many self-proclaimed media persons barge into their offices without carrying any authentic identification and start recording videos and posting them in various social media groups."

He warned that if the channels and journalists who operate these unlawful portals go unchecked, law and order crises could emerge, thereby disrupting the district's calm fabric. 

"In the interest of the general public, you are requested to identify all false media organisations functioning in the district without legal registration."  

You should also check the backgrounds and financing sources of all so-called journalists who operate these illicit portals without a proper licence or authorization from the appropriate authority," Islam stated.

"A list of all such media organisations' and so-called journalists may be shared with this office for further action," the DC said. 

M Taskeen Wani, President of the Ramban Working Journalist Group, hailed the district administration's action, saying it was a long-standing demand of the association to curtail the activities of those who are bringing a bad reputation to the profession.
