Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed concern over the continued closure of Srinagar International Airport and urged the Central Government to intervene to restore civilian flight operations at the earliest.
Speaking on the issue, Omar Abdullah said the prolonged suspension of flights is causing significant inconvenience to residents, tourists, students, business travelers, and patients who depend on air connectivity. He emphasized that Kashmir's economy, particularly its tourism sector, relies heavily on uninterrupted air services and that the closure is affecting normal life across the region.
The Chief Minister has reportedly communicated the matter to the Union Government and relevant aviation authorities, requesting a review of the situation and early resumption of commercial flights. He stressed that while security considerations are important, efforts should be made to minimize disruptions for civilians and ensure that essential connectivity is maintained.
The closure of Srinagar Airport has affected travel plans during a crucial period for tourism in the Kashmir Valley. Industry stakeholders, including hotel operators, tour organizers, and local businesses, have voiced concerns about cancellations and economic losses resulting from reduced air access to the region.
Officials have indicated that the restrictions are linked to prevailing security and operational considerations. However, Omar Abdullah has urged authorities to explore all possible options to reopen the airport for civilian use as soon as conditions permit.
The Chief Minister noted that improved connectivity is vital not only for tourism but also for trade, healthcare access, education, and overall economic activity in Jammu and Kashmir. He said the administration remains in touch with the Centre and hopes for a positive resolution in the coming days.
The matter is expected to be reviewed by the concerned central agencies, with residents and businesses closely watching for any announcement regarding the resumption of regular flight operations at Srinagar Airport.
