Operation Sherawali, the ongoing anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, entered its 21st consecutive day on Friday as security forces continued extensive search operations in the forested areas of the Manjakote sector. The operation is being carried out jointly by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and other security agencies to track down suspected terrorists believed to be hiding in the region.
The operation is centered around the Gambir Mughlan and Dorimal forest belt, a rugged and densely wooded area that has posed significant challenges for security personnel. Troops have been conducting round-the-clock searches, combing difficult terrain and maintaining a high state of alert in an effort to locate and neutralize potential terror threats. Officials said the mission continues with sustained intensity despite the operational challenges posed by the region’s geography.
As part of the operation, security forces have increased area domination patrols and strengthened surveillance across sensitive locations. Checkpoints in and around the operational zone have also been reinforced, with vehicles and individuals subjected to thorough screening to prevent the movement of suspicious elements. Authorities say these measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of local residents while maintaining pressure on militant networks operating in the Pir Panjal region.
Security agencies are reportedly using modern surveillance equipment and other technological resources to support the search effort. Earlier stages of the operation saw the deployment of drones, helicopters, and sniffer dogs as forces intensified efforts to locate infiltrators believed to be hiding in the forests after reports of suspicious activity and an initial encounter in the area.
The operation has also come at a cost. Earlier this month, an Army officer lost his life after falling into a gorge while participating in the anti-terror mission in Rajouri, highlighting the risks faced by personnel operating in the region’s harsh terrain.
Officials have appealed to residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security agencies. They emphasized that public cooperation remains crucial in maintaining peace and stability in the region. Security forces have reiterated their commitment to continuing the operation until its objectives are achieved, expressing confidence that sustained pressure will help eliminate terrorist threats and strengthen long-term security in the area.
