In a major boost to rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, the Union Railway Minister flagged off the extended Srinagar–Jammu Vande Bharat Express on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in the region’s transport infrastructure. The semi-high-speed train, which earlier operated between Srinagar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, has now been extended up to Jammu Tawi, improving direct access between the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu region.
The extension comes into effect from April 30, 2026, and is expected to enhance passenger convenience, reduce travel time, and strengthen economic as well as tourism activities in the Union Territory. The train is operated by Northern Railways and runs on the strategically important Jammu–Baramulla rail line.
With this extension, the total distance covered by the train has increased to around 272 kilometres, up from the earlier 189 km route. The journey time remains approximately three hours, offering a fast and comfortable alternative to road travel through the mountainous terrain.
The Vande Bharat Express is equipped with modern features such as fully air-conditioned coaches, airline-style seating, onboard Wi-Fi, infotainment systems, and advanced safety measures including the Kavach system. The train operates six days a week, providing regular and reliable connectivity for passengers.
Officials said the extension to Jammu Tawi is a crucial step toward integrating the Kashmir Valley more closely with the national rail network. Jammu serves as a key gateway to the rest of India, and the direct Vande Bharat service is expected to benefit not only daily commuters but also pilgrims and tourists visiting destinations like Vaishno Devi and Srinagar.
The Railway Minister highlighted that the project reflects the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir and promoting regional development. He also noted that the introduction and expansion of Vande Bharat trains across the country are part of a broader push to modernise Indian Railways with faster, safer, and more comfortable services.
Passengers and local residents have welcomed the move, calling it a game-changer for travel in the region. With reduced travel time and improved comfort, the extended Srinagar–Jammu Vande Bharat Express is set to become a preferred mode of transport for thousands of travellers.
