Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have busted a suspected militant hideout in Baramulla district and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition, including rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) rounds, during a joint search operation, officials said on Sunday.
According to officials, the operation was launched in a forested area of Baramulla after security agencies received specific intelligence inputs regarding suspicious movement and the possible presence of hidden weapons in the region. The search was carried out jointly by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and other security personnel.
During the operation, forces discovered a concealed hideout believed to have been used by militants operating in the area. A detailed search of the location led to the recovery of RPG ammunition along with other war-like stores, officials said.
The recovered items reportedly included RPG rounds, ammunition, explosive material and supplies suspected to be meant for militant activities. Security agencies believe the hideout may have been used for storing weapons and logistical support ahead of planned attacks in the region.
After the recovery, bomb disposal and forensic teams were called to the spot to examine the seized material. The area was later sanitised to ensure there were no additional explosives or hidden traps nearby.
Officials said the timely recovery of the ammunition helped avert a possible threat to security forces and civilians in the area. Investigators are now trying to determine which militant group was linked to the hideout and how long the weapons had been stored there.
Search operations in the surrounding forest region continued for several hours as forces attempted to trace any militants who might have been using the location. Additional surveillance has also been intensified in nearby villages and sensitive areas.
Baramulla district has witnessed several anti-militancy operations in recent years due to attempts by militant groups to revive activities in north Kashmir. Security forces have repeatedly carried out searches in forest zones and border areas to intercept infiltration attempts and locate hidden weapon caches.
Officials said the investigation remains ongoing and further recoveries cannot be ruled out. Security agencies are also examining whether the seized ammunition had any connection to recent militant movements or planned attacks in the Valley.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and immediately report any suspicious activity to local police or security forces as counter-terror operations continue across Jammu and Kashmir.
