Srinagar: Security has been significantly strengthened across tourist destinations in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of the first anniversary of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, officials said. The heightened alert comes as authorities aim to prevent any possible attempts to disrupt peace in the region, especially at popular tourist hubs.

The April 22, 2025 attack at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam had left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead and several others injured, marking one of the most shocking incidents in recent years. Following the attack, tourism in the region had taken a major hit, with several destinations temporarily closed and strict security reviews conducted before gradual reopening.

According to officials, all security agencies across the Kashmir Valley have been placed on high alert. Extra deployment of security personnel has been made at sensitive tourist spots, hotels, transport hubs, and public gathering areas. Surveillance has also been intensified with round-the-clock monitoring in key areas.

Authorities have also been instructed to maintain close coordination among local police, paramilitary forces, and intelligence units. Senior officers have reviewed security arrangements on the ground, ensuring strict vigilance ahead of the anniversary date. Special focus is being given to Pahalgam and surrounding areas, which remain symbolically significant due to last year’s attack.

In recent months, the region has seen a gradual revival of tourism, with visitors returning to popular destinations. However, officials remain cautious, emphasizing that any lapse in security could affect the fragile recovery of the tourism sector.

Additional measures introduced after the attack, including verification systems for service providers and increased monitoring of tourist activities, continue to be in place. Authorities have reiterated that ensuring tourist safety remains the top priority.

Meanwhile, local stakeholders in the tourism industry have welcomed the security reinforcement, expressing hope that Kashmir’s image as a safe travel destination will continue to improve.

As the anniversary approaches, the administration remains on alert, aiming to ensure peace and prevent any untoward incident across the Valley’s tourist hotspots.
