Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore carried out coordinated searches at multiple locations on Saturday in connection with an ongoing investigation related to a case linked to Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), officials said.
According to police sources, the searches were conducted in several areas of North Kashmir based on specific intelligence inputs and evidence gathered during the course of the investigation. The operation was aimed at identifying individuals allegedly involved in activities considered unlawful under provisions of the anti-terror law.
Officials said the case is part of a broader investigation into alleged networks and support systems associated with banned organisations. The raids were carried out early in the day by teams of local police, with assistance from other security agencies, to ensure coordinated action and prevent any disruption.
During the searches, multiple residential premises and suspected locations were examined. Officials said electronic devices, documents, and other materials were seized for further analysis. These items are expected to be scrutinised to establish links, if any, between individuals under investigation and the larger network being probed.
Police maintained that the action was purely investigative in nature and based on credible inputs. They added that all procedures were followed as per legal requirements under UAPA provisions. No arrests were immediately confirmed at the time of reporting, but questioning of several individuals is expected to continue.
The investigation is focused on uncovering alleged attempts to revive or support activities linked to banned groups, as well as identifying any financial or logistical assistance being provided. Authorities said efforts are underway to map out the full network and ensure that any unlawful activity is addressed in accordance with the law.
Security in Sopore and surrounding areas was tightened during the operation as a precautionary measure. Officials said the searches were completed without any major incident and the situation remained under control throughout the day.
Senior police officers reiterated that strict action will continue against individuals or groups found involved in activities that threaten public order and national security. They also urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and avoid spreading rumours that could create unnecessary tension.
Further details are expected as the investigation progresses and forensic analysis of the seized materials is completed. Authorities said additional action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing probe.
