Security forces have stepped up vigil across Jammu and Kashmir and launched extensive search operations ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra, officials said on Thursday.
With the pilgrimage expected to draw thousands of devotees, authorities have intensified area domination exercises, vehicle checks, and anti-terror operations along the yatra routes. Security agencies, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Indian Army, and paramilitary forces, are working in close coordination to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage.
Officials said special focus is being placed on the twin routes leading to the holy cave shrine the traditional Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter Baltal route in Ganderbal district. Both routes are being thoroughly sanitized, with security personnel conducting combing operations in forested and high-altitude areas to rule out any threat.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police has increased checkpoints and deployed additional personnel at sensitive locations. Surveillance has also been enhanced using drones and CCTV cameras to monitor movement and detect any suspicious activity in real time.
In addition to ground operations, intelligence agencies have ramped up monitoring to track potential threats. Officials noted that recent inputs have prompted a proactive approach, leading to intensified search operations in several districts, particularly in south Kashmir.
The yatra, which holds immense religious significance for Hindu devotees, sees pilgrims trekking to the holy cave shrine of Lord Shiva located in the Himalayas. Given the region’s security sensitivities, elaborate arrangements are made every year to safeguard pilgrims.
Authorities have also tightened security in base camps and transit points, including registration centres and accommodation facilities. Bomb disposal squads, sniffer dogs, and quick reaction teams have been deployed as part of a multi-layered security grid.
Officials reiterated that ensuring the safety of pilgrims remains the top priority. They added that all necessary steps are being taken to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents during the yatra period.
The administration has urged devotees to follow official advisories and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a smooth and incident-free pilgrimage.
