At least 27 people were killed and several injured when a four-storey commercial building near Mundka Metro station in Delhi caught fire on Friday. The firefighters carried on rescue operations until late Friday night. But looking at the severity of the fire, officials say the death toll may rise.

“The fire started on the first floor of the building which had an office of Cofe Impex Private Limited, CCTV cameras, and router manufacturing company,” said the DCP, Outer, Sameer Sharma.

The fire broke are 4,40 pm, and rescuers instantly rushed to the spot but the magnitude of the blaze was intense. Eventually, when the team choked out the fire, the building was left with charred bodies.

Due to highly combustible material and a narrow passage, rescue teams found it challenging to douse the fire and evacuate the people from the building.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, expressed their grief over the incident.

“Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a tragic fire in Delhi. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

The PM also announced that a relief of Rs 2 lakh each will be given to the family of those who lost their lives, and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

“Shocked and pained to know abt this tragic incident. I am constantly in touch wid officers. Our brave firemen are trying their best to control the fire and save lives. God bless all,” tweeted Chief Minister Kejriwal.
