Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav decided not to send his ally Jayant Chaudhary to the Rajya Sabha on his party's ticket. Out of party’s three seats in the upper house, nominations for two have already been filed.

Former Union Minister Kapil Sibal, after exiting the Congress party has filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate supported by the Samajwadi Party. Javed Ali Khan has also filed his nomination from the party.

Speculation is that the third seat might go to the party leader, and Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav.

As per the sources, Akhilesh had promised a seat to Jayant Chaudhary in Rajya Sabha but the latter insisted on going on his own party Rashtriya Lok Dal's candidate with support from the Samajwadi Party.

The Samajwadi Party has shifted its support to Kapil Sibal and the move is seen as a quid pro quo after his efforts as party MP Azam Khan's lawyer.
