New Delhi: National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on Tuesday welcomed senior representatives from BRICS member and partner nations at the 16th BRICS National Security Advisers' and High Representatives' Meeting in New Delhi. The high-level gathering brought together security officials from major emerging economies to discuss global and regional security challenges, geopolitical developments, terrorism, cyber threats and strategic cooperation.
The meeting began with a formal welcome by Doval, followed by a group photograph of the participating delegates. Among the prominent attendees were Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu, Iran's Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ghadir Nezamipour, UAE National Security Council Secretary-General Ali Mohammed Hammad Al Shamsi and South African Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni.
In his opening remarks, Doval emphasized that BRICS has a special role to play in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to address security concerns and strengthen cooperation among member nations. The discussions focused on global peace, regional stability, counter-terrorism measures and emerging security threats.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Doval held a series of bilateral engagements with representatives from China, Iran, Brazil and Ethiopia. During his talks with Wang Yi, both sides reviewed recent developments in India-China relations and noted progress toward gradual normalization. Discussions with Iranian officials focused on the evolving situation in West Asia and regional security concerns.
The meeting comes at a significant time as geopolitical tensions continue in several regions, including West Asia. Doval also welcomed recent diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions, expressing cautious optimism over developments that could contribute to regional stability and global economic security.
India, which will chair BRICS in 2026, is expected to use its leadership role to strengthen cooperation among member nations under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Officials believe the New Delhi meeting will help shape the security agenda ahead of future BRICS summits and reinforce the bloc's growing influence on global governance issues.
