“Go home and cook,” says a Maharashtra BJP leader to MP Supriya Sule

On Wednesday, Maharashtra BJP chairman Chandrakant Patil made a highly controversial remark about Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Supriya Sule, which sparked controversy. During a protest, he told the MP, “If you don’t understand politics, go home and cook.”

The sexist remark was made while the two parties sparred over OBC (Other Backward Class) reservations in Maharashtra.

The BJP representative was likely reacting to Supriya Sule’s comparison of Maharashtra’s campaign for OBC quota to Madhya Pradesh’s, and her criticism of how the BJP-run state received the Supreme Court’s approval for quota in local elections. Ms Sule, whose party governs Maharashtra alongside the Shiv Sena and the Congress, claimed she phoned Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan during his visit to Delhi, but he refused to say what he did to get the reprieve.

“Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Minister visited Delhi and met’someone…’ I’m not sure what transpired over the next two days, but they received approval for OBC reservations “Ms Sule spoke in Marathi at a party gathering.

When the Maharashtra BJP president heard the remark while protesting nearby, he snarled: “Why are you in politics at all? Simply return home and prepare a meal. Get us the OBC quota by going to Delhi or a cemetery. How come you don’t know how to get an appointment with a Chief Minister despite being a Lok Sabha member?”

Faced with anger, Mr Patil attempted damage management today, stating that in politics, Ms Sule should “travel to the communities and try to understand them.”

“Respect for women is in my blood. What I meant was that she should get used to living in rural places where sayings like these exist. I admire Supriya-tai and we communicate frequently “According to the BJP leader.

“I am proud of my wife, who is a homemaker, mother, and SUCCESSFUL politician, among India’s many industrious and bright women… Mr Sule said in a post, “This is an insult to all women…”
