JUSTICE DY CHANDRACHUD TAKES OATH AS THE 50th CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA

After serving as a Supreme Court judge for more than six years, Justice DY Chandrachud took the oath on Wednesday to become the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will serve in the Supreme Court for two years.


Former Chief Justice YV Chandrachud was his father. In the history of the nation's judiciary, Justice Chandrachud and his father are the only father-son team to hold the position of CJI.


Over the years, Justice Chandrachud has been characterised to as "the liberals' favourite and a progressive judge" by some and as "a judge who constantly states his views. In future big occurrences, he will be in charge of the Supreme Court's procedures.


The nation now has its 50th Chief Justice of India, a man with the courage of his convictions and a fierce dedication to the supremacy of citizens' fundamental rights, a quality that has been evident in his judgments.


Justice Chandrachud has crafted observations through his judgments on significant subjects including fundamental rights, privacy, gender sensitization, and the rights of women and LGBTQ+ individuals, among others.
