Kuldhara Village, located 18 km from Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, is a deserted village that is known for its mysterious disappearance of all the villagers in a single night. According to popular folklore, the Paliwal Brahmins who resided in the village were supposed to pay taxes to the minister of the state, Salim Singh. However, when Salim Singh expressed his desire to marry the chief's daughter and threatened to levy exaggerated taxes if they refused, the chief and the villagers of 84 adjoining villages decided to migrate to another place instead of giving the girl in marriage. No one saw the villagers leave nor did anyone know where they all went, making their disappearance a mystery to this day. The village is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is open to the public. The best time to visit is from October to March.
