Meta is set to appear before the Central Government within the next 7–10 days to explain its policies and address technical concerns raised by authorities, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary said on Thursday. The meeting follows growing concerns over the functioning of Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and their handling of user-related issues.
Speaking to reporters, the MeitY Secretary said the government has sought detailed clarifications from Meta on both its policy framework and technical systems. Officials are expected to discuss issues related to platform operations, content moderation, user safety, grievance redressal mechanisms and technical compliance with India's digital regulations.
The government has not disclosed the complete agenda of the meeting but indicated that several concerns raised by users, public representatives and regulatory authorities will be taken up. The interaction is expected to help authorities better understand Meta's internal processes and the measures it is taking to address complaints and improve transparency.
The development comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of major digital platforms in India. In recent years, the Centre has repeatedly emphasised that social media companies must comply with Indian laws, strengthen accountability and ensure timely action on user grievances. The government has also maintained that digital intermediaries should operate responsibly while protecting users' rights and maintaining transparency.
