Myanmar court sentences Suu Kyiv to 5 years of imprisonment for corruption

In the case decided on Wednesday, Suu Kyi was accused of accepting a bribe of $600,000 and seven gold bars in 2017-18 from Phyo Min Thein, the former chief minister of Yangon. But her lawyers were heard stating that she rejected all his allegations.

Myanmar’s former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment for corruption.

A court in the military-led country passed the judgment, on Wednesday, in the first of several corruption cases against her.

Last year, Suu Kyi was dislodged from the government after the country was taken over by the army. She was accused of accepting gold and a colossal amount of money as a bribe from her political colleagues.

On the other hand, her supporters have described the court ruling as an unjust move to dishonor Suu Kyi and debarring her from returning to politics.

Suu Kyi has already been sentenced to six years imprisonment in other cases and is facing ten more charges of corruption.

As far as the maximum punishment for corruption in Mayanmar is concerned, a convict can face 15 years of incarceration.
