On the eighth death anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, leaders across the political spectrum paid tribute to the veteran statesman, remembering him as a visionary leader, democrat, powerful orator and poet.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and several other leaders paid homage at Vajpayee’s memorial, ‘Sadaiv Atal’, in New Delhi.
Modi described Vajpayee as an extraordinary statesman whose vision, leadership and commitment to good governance continued to inspire generations. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla highlighted his remarkable parliamentary career, describing him as a powerful orator, accomplished journalist and sensitive poet who strengthened India’s democratic traditions.
Leaders from across party lines also recalled Vajpayee’s contribution to Indian public life. NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar praised his respect for parliamentary traditions, commitment to national interest and faith in democracy. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said Vajpayee’s ideals of political ethics, public service and ‘Nation First’ continue to inspire the country.
Vajpayee, one of India’s most influential political figures, served as Prime Minister three times. He was known not only for his political leadership but also for his poetry and distinctive oratory. His tenure was marked by major developments in infrastructure, national security, diplomacy and economic policy.
He died on August 16, 2018, at the age of 93. Eight years after his death, Vajpayee continues to command respect across political boundaries, with leaders remembering his statesmanship, democratic values and lifelong service to the nation.
