Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, August 2, 2026, launched the nationwide ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, a major youth-focused campaign aimed at combating substance abuse and building a healthier, drug-free generation. The initiative was launched through video conferencing and is being positioned as a nationwide Jan Bhagidari movement against drug addiction.

The campaign will continue for 100 weeks, with activities planned every Sunday across the country. The objective is to create sustained awareness among young people about the harmful effects of drugs and encourage them to adopt healthier lifestyles. The campaign carries the theme “GenZ Against Addiction”, placing young people at the centre of the movement.

Addressing participants, PM Modi said that as India moves towards the goal of a developed nation, it is essential for its youth to remain physically and mentally healthy, confident and free from addiction. He urged young Indians to stay away from drugs and become ambassadors of positive change in their communities.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the wider impact of drug abuse, saying addiction can damage not only an individual's health and career but also affect families and society. He called for parents, teachers and communities to play an active role in preventing substance abuse and supporting young people struggling with addiction.

The campaign will include a range of public activities such as walkathons, meditation sessions, sports and cultural programmes, art competitions, street-level awareness activities and discussion forums. These programmes are designed to involve young people directly and turn the anti-drug message into a sustained community movement.

According to the campaign framework, the launch involved participation at nearly 10,000 locations, with youth taking the Nasha Mukti pledge. More than one crore young people were expected to participate in the pledge and related activities, underlining the scale of the initiative.

PM Modi also stressed that people recovering from addiction should not face social stigma. Instead, families and communities should support them and encourage rehabilitation through professional help, healthy activities and social acceptance.

The government hopes the 100-week campaign will create a long-term movement led by young people themselves. By combining awareness, community participation and rehabilitation support, the initiative seeks to strengthen the country's fight against substance abuse and contribute to the broader vision of Viksit Bharat.
