Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa has secured his place in the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Final after a strong run at the Sinquefield Cup in St Louis. The 21-year-old earned qualification with one round of the prestigious tournament still remaining.
Praggnanandhaa sealed his place in the final after defeating French Grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the eighth and penultimate round of the Sinquefield Cup. The victory took his score to five points from eight games, putting him level at the top with American Grandmaster Wesley So.
The Indian star's qualification is another major achievement in what has been an impressive 2026 season. He recently won the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz title, his maiden title at the event, further strengthening his position in the Grand Chess Tour standings.
Against Vachier-Lagrave, Praggnanandhaa showed his tactical strength in a Ruy Lopez opening. The Frenchman took risks early in the game, including a piece sacrifice, but Praggnanandhaa defended accurately and eventually converted his advantage. He finished the game in just 28 moves.
The qualification also means Praggnanandhaa will feature in the Grand Chess Tour Finals for the second consecutive year. His consistency across the tour's events has helped him remain among the leading players in the overall standings.
The 2026 Grand Chess Tour consists of six events, including tournaments in Poland, Romania, Croatia and St Louis, followed by the season-ending finals. The final will be held at the Saint Louis Chess Club from August 21 to 28, with four players competing in a knockout format for the title.
Before turning his attention to the final, Praggnanandhaa still has one important game left at the Sinquefield Cup. He will face Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri in the final round. Wesley So, meanwhile, will take on Uzbekistan's Javokhir Sindarov.
The remaining games could also decide who joins Praggnanandhaa in the Final Four. Sindarov and German Grandmaster Vincent Keymer remain in contention, while the battle for the remaining qualifying spots is still open.
For Praggnanandhaa, the immediate target will be to finish the Sinquefield Cup strongly and potentially claim the tournament title before heading into the Grand Chess Tour finale. His qualification adds another significant chapter to the rise of one of India's leading young chess stars.
