Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed was elected President of UAE

Sheikh Mohamed was elected by the Federal Supreme Council, according to the state-run WAM news agency, following yearsof working behind the scenes while hishalf-brother Sheikh Khalifa remained ill. 

The decision was made at a meeting of the rulers of the United Arab Emirate seven sheikhdoms.  

It comes following the death on Friday of former President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. 

The rulers of the country's sheikhdoms, which include the skyscraper-studded city of Dubai, voted unanimously, according to WAM. 

After the vote, Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, declared on Twitter, "We congratulate him and swear devotion to him, and our people pledge allegiance to him."  

"He is leading the entire country on the roads of glory and honour, God willing." 

Sheikh Mohamed, sometimes known as MBZ, is one of the Arab world's most prominent leaders.  

He is a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, and he heads one of the Gulf's best-equipped forces. 

Since the creation of the UAE federation by Sheikh Khalifa's father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, in 1971, Abu Dhabi, which controls the majority of the Gulf state's oil resources, has held the presidency.
