The investigation into Amber Heard and Jonny Deep resumes

Few could have expected it would turn into such a vicious brawl so quickly as it did this afternoon.

"You testified that you were assaulted with a liquor bottle" in Australia during the 2015 filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, plaintiff's attorney Camille Vasquez queried a very agitated Heard at one point today afternoon. 

"I didn't want to inform anyone," said Heard, who appeared to be lying.  

"I hated it, I despised it," she later stated during her cross-examination of Depp's relationship status and the several images she took of him unconscious, either asleep or "on the nod."

On Monday, the first step of cross examination revealed one of the trial's riddles.

On Monday, shortly after taking the stand to begin cross examination, Vasquez told Heard that the sunglass-wearing Depp had not looked at her during the trial, which began on April 11.  

"Not that I've noticed," Heard grumbledas Vasquez said Depp had stupidly "promised you you'd never see his eyes again." 

A late 2016 audio video of the pair meeting up in San Francisco after they had separated and a restraining order had been filed was played to the jury to that purpose.  

Depp can be heard muttering on the audio that his soon-to-be ex-wife will never see his eyes again.  

"After all the trash you said -you will always be nothing to me," Depp says on the recording.

The scene saw Depp and Heard sittingalone at their respective tables and on the stand, doing their best to avoid looking at each other, after a long conference with all the primary attorneys before Judge Penny Azcarte on the return from the afternoon break in the Fairfax County Courthouse on Monday.  

After divorcing in 2016 amid media criticism and a TRO, Depp sued Heard for millions in March 2019 over a late 2018 Washington Post op-ed she penned about being a domesticabuse survivor. 

Though Depp was not named in the oped, he has claimed that the relationship "devastated" his career and that he was the one who was abused in the relationship. 

Heard countersued for $100 million in the summer of 2020 after failing to getthe lawsuit dismissed or relocated out of Virginia.  

That countersuit was filed months before Depp's libel suit in the United Kingdom against The Sun tabloid for labelling him a "wife beater" was dismissed inNovember 2020.

Brown Rudick's Vasquez pressed Heard to explain why, on the late 2016 audio clip, she seemed to tease Depp to tell the world that he was the mistreated one in the relationship, not her, with short and sharp questions and a now-more-often-looking-up Depp observing. 

Heard pushed back, "I was saying it because he was a man who beat me up for five years."

"I'd never be able to harm Johnny." 

Vasquez attempted to discredit Heard's emotional testimony from today and early May in a deliberate move to cast the witness under an increasingly harsh light.  

To that purpose, she began by citing incidents such as Depp "striking you multiple times" in March 2013 and a 2015 incident in Tokyo.  

Vasquez chastised Heard for the lack of bruises, cuts, and more in many of the images taken around the time of the violence she claims Depp inflicted onher, as he did practically all of the alleged acts of violence that were shot and submitted in the case.

This is an approach that Heard's side believes is symptomatic of Depp's current tactics. 

"In the face of demeaning interrogation, Amber remained firm and stated the truth," a source close to the Heard camp told Deadline as the court session ended.  

"Women are reluctant to stand up and speak out about domestic violence and abuse because of behaviour like this."

In that context, Heard was questioned about why she didn't appear to be showing any signs of the violent abuse she claims the Pirates of the Caribbean actor battered her with, as evidenced by photos from various film and industry events during her marriage to Depp and a 2015 clip from James Corden's CBS late night show.  

"In none of these photos, your nose appears to be wounded,"

Several times during the back-and-forth between the defendant and the lawyer, Heard sharply stated that she had delivered all of the evidence she possessed.  

She also stated that she "would like to" have added images not seen by the jury, but that "that is not my responsibility." 

The cross examination, punctuated by a series of "I don't know" and "I don't recall" responses from Heard, also focused on the actress' disputed assertion that she donated her 2016 $7 million divorce settlement to charity, all of which she had received by October 2018. 

Heard added, "I pledged the lot" to the nonprofits.  

"I've been unable to keep those promises because I'm being sued."

Vasquez correctly noted that Heard had all of the $7 million nearly six months before her ex-husband sued her in March 2019, indicating that she was not limited by legal concerns during that time.

In this context, Heard's post-Depp lover Elon Musk's $500,000 donations to the ACLU were re-entered into the record.  

In some of her last statements on the stand, Heard argued that Musk's donations were not deducted from the $3.5 million the actress had committed -a distinction that the jury may have missed in the staccato back and forth.

Musk was listed as a potential witnessin the trial by Heard, but it was announced weeks ago that the would-be Twitter CEO would not be testifying. 

Vasquez became engrossed in the paperwork of a visit by the actress to the actor's physician, Dr. David Kipper, after repeatedly mentioning the lack of medical records for many of Heard's reported ailments.  

Vasquez was knocked off her game while trying to hit Heard on the lack of injury citations when Heard mentioned that the report claimed she was a "well-nourished guy."  

Heard, sensing an opening, stated that she believed the Kipper documentation had "a lot missing."  

Vasquez quickly responded, "There was nothing to document." 

When Depp's self-admitted drug use was brought up on another occasion, the two sparred about whether the actress "caught" the actor using cocaine.  

Things got almost hilarious when Heard responded to Vasquez's demand to know why there wasn't any "residue" on the "tidy" table, centred on a widely viewed photo of a table at one of the couple's apartments with multiple lines of the drug carved out on it.

"When you snort cocaine, it usually goes up your nose," Heard said, suggesting that the lawyer didn't understand how cocaine worked. 

The widely ridiculed Depp appeared to giggle and jest with his lawyer Ben Chew, as he had done for the previous fourweeks of the trial.  

The actor was particularly animated during one segment of today's hearing, when the lawyers were speaking with Judge Penny Azcarte after a brief break.

The cross examination of Heard came to a conclusion today about 5:22 PM ET, as the trial entered its final weeks.  

It will resume on Tuesday, with court scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET.  

Judge Azcarte has stated that closing arguments should begin and end on May 27.

"With my face down, Johnny had his hand on part of my face and was beating my head, repeatedly punching me in the head," she added.  

"That's why I have a bruise on my temple."

Depp has categorically denied abusingHeard.  

He filed the case after she wrote in a December 2018 op-ed for the Washington Post that "two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt thefull weight of our culture's anger for women who speak up."

Heard testified on Monday that Depp's drug use had gotten so bad by January 2016 that he was "hallucinating."  

Although Depp's lawyer objected to that particular description, Heard was allowed to detail other parts of his behaviour.

"He was talking to people who weren't there," she explained, referring to others who were not present.  

"He'd make a remark about someone in the room behind me who wasn't present."  

It was a nightmare." 

Heard also addressed the infamous April 2016 incident in which they got into an altercation after Depp failed to show up for her 30th birthday dinner.  

She claimed they had a pushing match and Depp threw a bottle of champagne through a painting during their quarrel.  

He then wrestled her down on their bed and grabbed her by her pubic area, she claimed.  

'Look who's so tough,' he was teasing me.  

'Want to be a man right now?'  

According to her, Depp finally yelled at her, "Happy f*cking birthday!" and walked out. 

She stated a friend was coming over the next day and they were going to the Coachella Music Festival.  

Boo, one of their dogs, had been on the bed but was having bowel troubles.  

Depp has previously testified that faeces had been left in the bed, an episode that prompted a Saturday Night Live parody over the weekend. 

Heard, on the other hand, denied pulling any sort of hoax.  

"I don't think that's humorous at all," she stated flatly.  

"I believe that's repulsive."
