The United States has carried out a fresh round of strikes against Iranian military targets near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, according to the US Central Command, or CENTCOM. The latest operation marks another escalation in the conflict as Washington seeks to limit Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in one of the world’s most important energy corridors.
CENTCOM said American forces used precision-guided weapons to target Iranian coastal defence systems, missile-launching positions and other military infrastructure. Reports indicated that some of the strikes were directed at facilities on Greater Tunb Island, an Iranian-controlled island located close to major shipping routes in the Persian Gulf.
The US military said the operation was intended to degrade capabilities allegedly used by Iran to attack or intimidate civilian vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Washington has repeatedly stated that freedom of navigation through the waterway must be protected and that attacks on commercial ships would draw a military response.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. A significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports passes through the route, making any disruption a serious concern for global markets. Rising tensions have already contributed to volatility in crude-oil prices and increased security warnings for vessels operating in the region.
The renewed strikes came amid Iranian attacks on US-linked facilities and military locations in Gulf countries, according to American and regional reports. Iran has also threatened to disrupt energy exports from the Middle East in response to US military action and restrictions on its ports. Tehran has described the American strikes as acts of aggression and has warned that it reserves the right to retaliate.
The latest military action has further weakened hopes of an immediate diplomatic breakthrough. A temporary understanding between the two sides had earlier reduced hostilities, but negotiations later stalled as disputes continued over Iran’s nuclear activities, sanctions and regional security.
US officials maintain that the strikes are focused on military targets and are aimed at protecting international shipping rather than beginning a wider ground war. However, security analysts have warned that repeated attacks and counterattacks could trigger a broader regional confrontation involving Gulf states and Iran-backed armed groups.
As military operations continue, international attention remains focused on the Strait of Hormuz, where any prolonged closure or disruption could affect fuel supplies, shipping costs and inflation across the world.
